Kling drove production cars in hill-climbs and trials as an amateur before the war but his racing career did not really start until 1947, when he scored a victory at Hockenheim with a BMW. Retired to take up a management position within Mercedes following their withdrawal from racing at the end of 1955. During the WWII he gained mechanical experience servicing Luftwaffe aircraft, and after the cessation of hostilities he resumed his motorsport involvement in a BMW 328.
