One of the true stars of pre-war racing. Started in GP racing as head mechanic for Luigi Fagioli, eventually being given the chance to try out as a driver. Hermann started racing motorbikes as a teenager.
Retired from competition immediately the German GP 1954 returning to work at the Mercedes factory. For many years he continued to demonstrate the famous cars which had brought him so much success early in his racing days. 1986 he drove a Mercedes W154 before the German GP at Nurburgring
