Started his own team 1978 fielding ex-works Lotus 78s. 1979 he first ran Lotus 79s before commissioning his own chassis, which only appeared for three Grands Prix before the team folded. After a mid-season crash in Indy Cars at Michigan he got an aversion to ovals, and retired at the end of the season at the age of 29.
