At the 1961 Italian GP Wolfgang and Jim Clark came togeather and he crashed up a bank and along a fence packed with spectators before rolling back down to the track. Von Trips and 11 spectators where killed. Before the race he was leading the championchip.
Von Trips's Ferrari team-mate Phil Hill won the race, and with it the drivers' championship.
