He studied structural engineering at University College, London where he joined the University Air Squadron and learned to fly. After graduating in 1948, he briefly joined the Royal Air Force.
Founder of F1 Team Lotus. He was invited to drive a third Vanwall at the 1956 French Grand Prix, but run into the back of his team-mate Hawthorne in practice, Colin's car was to damaged to race. In 2009 Litespeed announced that it would use the historic Lotus name for its attempt to enter Formula 1 for the 2010 season.
