Began his relationchip wiith McLaren when he was awarded the prestigious 'McLaren Autosport Young Driver of the Year Award' 1999 and where there test driver from 2006 until the end of 2014 when they parted when McLaren switched from Mercedes to Honda engines, with Paffett remaining part of the German manufacturer's factory DTM programme.
