Both Karl's father and grandfather had competed in the past, and naturally Karl followed suit. Karl was helped greatly by an old family friend, Gerhard Berger, to get started in FF1600 in 1987. And later assisted by Dr Helmut Marko. In 1990 he was piared with Jochen Mass in Groupe C. After a relatively low-speed crash during practice for the Monaco GP 1994, resulting in a brain contusion and swelling. He was hospitalised and kept in a medically induced coma for almost three weeks and missed most of the year. Some of his speed then where missing and in 1995 Sauber had to let him go, but he came back for the final GP of the year but had to retire from the Australian GP suffering the effects of a practice crash.
